January start eyed for Central America’s first subway

Construction of Central America’s first subway system, in Panama, will begin in January 2011 on a nearly 1.5-billion-dollar contract, the president’s office said Wednesday.

The Linea Uno construction consortium, which groups Brazil’s Construtora Norberto Odebrecht, Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) of Spain and France’s Alstom, won the contract a week ago.

The consortium’s bid was the costlier of the two finalists to build the 14-kilometer (nine-mile) subway in Panama City, but government officials said they preferred its technical qualities.
