Immigration talks with Mexico

16 December 2003

MADRID – Spanish Foreign Minister Ana Palacio met Tuesday with her Mexican counterpart, Luis Ernesto Derbez, for talks on a possible immigration deal between the two countries.

Derbez is interested in reaching an agreement with Palacio which would allow between 10,000 and 20,000 Mexicans to immigrate legally to Spain each year.

Speaking last week, Derbez said the accord would be similar to one Mexico has with Canada.

Mexican President Vicente Fox raised the issue of an immigration agreement when he met with Spanish Prime Minister José Maríá Aznar and King Juan Carlos during the Ibero-American summit in Bolivia last month.

Derbez is in Spain as part of a European tour.
