13 November 2006

MADRID — The alleged head of one of the Bulgarian organised crime gangs in Spain was in a grave condition in hospital after being shot in the head.

Peter Georget Morientes, 39, was shot three times while walking with his girlfriend in the Majadahonda area near Madrid, police said on Monday.

Three gunmen are being hunted by police.

Morientes was arrested in September last year as part of the Operation Traveller.

Police sources said at the time he was the head of a gang dedicated to money laundering.

His crime gang was also linked the falsification of credit cards, stealing of luxury cars.

Police think the attempted murder was ordered by a gang rival.

Morientes was shot on Sunday at about 3pm by three men who were driving a black Mercedes near where he had lived for the past five years.

Police said he was still conscious but was in intensive care in hospital.

He has undergone surgery on his neck.

Morientes was with his South American girlfriend another Spanish woman when he was shot.

Both women have refused to cooperate with police.
