Head of ETA logistics arm is arrested in France

30 November 2006

MADRID — The head of ETA’s logistics arm and two other members of the Basque terrorist group were arrested in France, police said on Thursday.

Zigor Garro Pirez was arrested with his girlfriend, Marijna Bernado and Ekain Mendizábal Mujika.

Mendizábal was condemned in June in his absence in Paris to a year in jail for bribery connected to terrorism.

Bernado is linked to the ETA cell in Barcelona and is said to have helped other members of the Basque separatist organisation to flee to other countries.

Police suspect Garro organised the theft of 300 revolvers and 50 pistols from an arms factory in southern France last month.

The latest arrests bring the number of ETA terrorists detained by Spanish and French police since the group declared a permanent ceasefire in March to 25.

The three were arrested in Lozere in central southern France.
