VITORIA – A ten-year-old girl was killed when a train hit the Land Rover in which she was travelling on a level crossing Tuesday, police said.

The accident happened at about 8.20am at Pobes, near Alava, about 21 kilometres from Vitoria in north-west Spain.

Her father, who was also in the car, was hurt in the accident but his injuries were not said to be life-threatening.

Police said the circumstances of the tragedy were still unclear.

But it was thought that the girl was a immigrant who came from north Africa.

EFE news agency reported the girl was the 22nd victim of an accident on a level crossing crash this year alone.

The worst accident happened on 9 April near Salamanca in western Spain when six people in their 20s were killed when their car was hit by a train.

Three others were seriously injured.

They had been travelling from the Basque Country to spend an Easter break in Salamanca.
