Fraudsters hijack campaign for 11 March victims

30 March 2004

CEUTA – The Red Cross condemned Tuesday fraudsters who were trying to raise funds for the victims of the 11 March terrorist attacks in Madrid.

Swindlers claimed to be raising funds on behalf of the Red Cross in Ceuta, in Spain’s north-African enclave.

The charity said the gang had made a number of telephone calls to companies and institutions and asked for cash.

The fraudsters asked for donations of EUR 180 to be sent to a bank account and offered to make announcements about the gifts on behalf of their unwitting victims.

The Red Cross has condemned the fake campaign and asked the police to launch an investigation.

The Spanish government along with many organisations across the country has given money and resources to support the victims of the terrorist attacks.
