JAEN – A police officer was critically ill in hospital Monday after he was hit by a lorry at the scene of a road crash.
Medical authorities said the 49-year-old officer was in a critical state with ‘grave’ brain injuries.
Three other officers were also injured in the accident on the A-44 road near Jaen in south-eastern Spain late Sunday.
The officer who is critical sustained serious brain injuries as well as a broken tibia and fractured shoulder blades.
Another officer had serious brain and stomach injuries as well as a fractured forearm, medical sources told EFE news agency.
A third officer suffered brain injuries and cuts. He had undergone an operation and suffered a broken ankle.
The fourth officer was a woman, who suffered a broken thigh bone and right arm.
Nine people in all were injured in the crash Monday which happened at about 8.25pm near Campillo de Arenas.
While police were attending an accident a lorry which was passing careered off the road and hit the officers as well as other people who had been involved in the original crash.
Police are investigating how the crash happened.
