Four Britons arrestedas cannabis seized
3 February 2004
MALAGA – Spanish police arrested four Britons Tuesday and seized 1.5 tonnes of cannabis in a raid in the southern port city of Malaga.
Police found the drugs hidden in compact disc racks and pieces of furniture in a warehouse in the city’s outskirts.
They believe they was brought into Spain by boat from Morocco.
The four – identified as Peter Logan D, 39, Gary Reginald F, 42, Carl W, 40, and Marcelino P, 67 – are suspected of planning to take the drugs to Britain.
The men are all British, although Marcelino P is from Gibraltar.
Cannabis was reclassified in the UK last week, and is now considered a Class C drug, which means police will no longer automatically arrest those caught in possession of it.
As part of the reclassification, the maximum penalty for trafficking class C drugs is being increased from five to 14 years.
