Five injured as gas explosion demolishes building

29 March 2006

MADRID — Five people have been injured in a spectacular gas explosion which has demolished a block of flats in Madrid.

A man aged 65 was said to have been seriously injured in the blast and four other residents are being treated for less serious injuries.

The whole building was destroyed in the blast which the emergency services believe was linked to a gas leak.

The explosion happened at 6.45am in a suburban area to the south of Madrid.

It may also have been caused by the accumulation of gas in a bottle, something which is commonly used throughout Spain to heat houses and cook food.

One neighbour, who is South American, said when she heard the blast, she thought it was an earthquake because “the whole house trembled”.

The remains of the building are to be demolished.
