Fighter crashes on exercise but pilot ejects safely

30 May 2005

NEUBURG-AN-DER-DONAU — A Spanish air force Mirage F-1 fighter jet crashed while on an exercise in southern Germany but the pilot parachuted to safety.

The German Defence Ministry in Berlin said the plane crashed into an uninhabited area near the Bavarian town of Neuburg-an-der-Donau, according to the German press agency DPA.

The pilot had safely ejected.

A spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Hartmut Beilmann, said the jet was not armed at the time.

The fighter caught fire 4 minutes after take-off from a Neuburg airfield.

The Spanish plane was participating in the German air force’s biggest exercise of the year.

The exercise — codenamed ‘Elite’ (for ‘electronic warfare live training exercise’) — involves forces from 19 nations including Germany.
