MADRID – AFP – A savage storm packing rain and winds strong enough to uproot trees injured around 20 people when it tore through Spain’s Mediterranean island of Mallorca, emergency services said Friday.
The sudden storm hit the island — popular with European tourists, especially Germans — late Thursday and wreaked destruction within the space of half an hour.
Authorities said winds racing at over 100 kilometres (60 miles) an hour pummelled the main town of Palma.
Three people were badly hurt: a private security employee whose guardhouse was blown away off by the gale, a municipal worker injured while driving and a child who was playing in car that was hit by an advertising billboard.
Many trees were uprooted, houses were damaged and traffic was cut on several roads overnight.
The storm headed north to France, which issued a weather alert for its southern regions that was extended through to Saturday.
