Fathers’ Day protest

19 March 2004

MADRID – Campaigners fighting for equal rights for men marked Fathers’ Day with a protest Friday for divorced parents.

Twenty protestors demanding “equality of rights and obligations for both after divorce” held a protest in the capital.

Groups who took part included the Spanish Federation of Associations for Custody and the Office for the Defence of Men and their Sons.

They attacked what they called “the psychiatric violence against separated fathers and their sons” in relation to the issue of access to children.

Jesús Arapiles, spokesman of the group, claimed in 96 percent of cases, custody of children was given to the mother.

In the the other four percent of cases, mothers either did not want to exercise their right to custody or were unable to see the children through illness, he added.

Fathers’ Day in Spain is on 19 March
