Family members arrested for pensioners’ murder

31 January 2005

BARCELONA-Police have arrested five members of the family of two pensioners who were brutally murdered in their home on Boxing Day.

The couple were found with severe head wounds in their home in Santa Susana outside Barcelona in north east Spain by a daughter-in-law.

The woman was aged 79 and her husband was 72, police said. They had lived in the same area for 30 years and ran a scrap yard.

They had a normal family life and had seen their relatives on Christmas Day, just before they were killed.

Five members of the same family, whose identities have not been revealed, have been arrested and will appear in court tomorrow and on Wednesday.

They were arrested in different areas of Catalonia.

Police sources said it first appeared that whoever killed the couple were searching for valuables in the house.
