Family killed in suspected gas explosion in Spain: mayor

A family of four, including two young children, died Saturday in a suspected gas blast that partially demolished a building in the northern Spanish city of Logrono, the city mayor said.

“Unfortunately today is a day of mourning for the city of Logrono,” Tomas Santos told reporters at the scene of the blast, adding that it had not yet been possible to identify the victims.

Spanish media said the dead were a 39-year-old Argentinian man, his 39-year-old Chilean wife and their two children, a nine-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl.

A further nine people were injured in the blast, including the 70-year-old mother of the deceased man who was in a serious condition in hospital with burns to over 10 percent of her body.

Police are investigating the causes of the blast which destroyed the third and fourth floors of the building on the Gran Via, the city’s main boulevard.
