MADRID – More than 120,000 foreigners living in Spain can vote in the forthcoming European elections, the government said Friday.

The number of foreign voters in Spain has risen by 50,000 since the last elections four years ago.

Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) said that according to the latest figures, there were 123,642 citizens from European Union countries now living in Spain.

Nearly 35 million European citizens have the right to vote in the elections across the continent on 13 June.

Voters from 25 countries will be able to choose who represents them at the EU parliament.

The number of members of the EU is to rise from 1 May as ten more countries, mostly from Eastern Europe, join the organisation.

According to sources from INE, there are also just over 1 million Spaniards living abroad who have the right to vote – more than 100,000 more than at the time of the 1999 election.

Foreign voters can contact their embassies or consulates between 26 April and 3 May in Spain in order to vote in the elections.
