PAMPLONA — A car-bomb exploded at a discotheque in the northern Spanish town of Santesteban, badly damaging the building but causing no injuries.
The car-bomb blast at the Bordatxo nightspot came after an anonymous telephone call to both the central office of the road users association in the Basque province of Guipuzcoa and the Basque daily Gara.
The caller said he spoke in the name of the Basque terrorist group ETA.
The bomb had been placed in a Volkswagen rental van parked behind the nightclub.
An association spokesman told EFE news agency that the call was received at 9:05 pm on Wednesday and the caller said that the device would explode at 10 pm.
The bomb detonated at the specified time, but the disco had been evacuated after the telephone warning and police had cordoned off the area.
Witnesses said that the explosion was “very powerful” and caused extensive damage to the disco and more moderate damage to surrounding buildings, including private homes some 300 meters (yards) away, some of which were occupied at the time.
Santesteban has some 1,400 residents.
ETA has killed more than 800 people since the 1960s in its armed campaign to carve an independent Basque state out of portions of northern Spain and south-western France.
