But, times have changed, and many have realised that living in a crowded place with pollution, noise and traffic can often be stressful and hasn’t led to the great life that they imagined.
With high unemployment all over Spain, but also a change in the way that people want to spend their time, a greater number of young people are choosing to go and live in the countryside for a healthier and calmer pace of life.
More and more of the country’s under 30s are feeling the pull of a simpler lifestyle, one where they can live quietly yet also set up a business that will provide them and their peers with what they need.
One such person is Manuel López-Toribio Moreno. He moved to the country and decided to set up his own business Granja Ahuevo, where he raises hens on an open farm in an environmentally friendly manner, and sells a variety of products over the Internet all across Spain.
Much of his success is due to the fact that he works with the land. He owns a number of hens that are out in the fresh air all day long, running around, and eating produce that is grown organically on the plot.
Visitors are invited to the farm, which is located in Castro del Río in Córdoba, to see how the hens are raised and what they are fed, so that they themselves then know that, if they consume the eggs, what they put into their bodies is ecologically sound. The birds are not made to ingest hormones, antibiotics or any other artificial substance and the food that they eat is not chemically treated or fertilised with chemicals, either.
Everything is produced using traditional methods, with respect to the land, environment and the animals – which was how it used to be before people became solely interested in making a huge profit.
Initially, the 22-year-old was given a loan in order to set up and get his business up and running. However, now, two years later, he has managed to pay off his debts and start making a profit. He loves his work despite the fact that it’s hard and takes up a lot of his time.
“Many people my age are looking for work in the cities, however, the countryside also has a lot to offer and is brimming with great opportunities,” says the young businessman farmer. “The main thing is to make sure that you offer the public what they are asking for.”
