Eight suspects arrested for trafficking in arms
30 March 2006
MADRID — Police have arrested eight suspected arms traffickers in raids in Madrid and Alicante.
Three Spaniards, a Syrian, one Argentinian, an Egyptian, an Estonian and a German were detained on Wednesday but details were only released the day after.
Police were still carrying out a number of raids at addresses in the capital.
At least one firearm has been seized.
The Syrian who was arrested is the brother of Ghasoub al Abrash Ghalyoun, who was acquitted in September in the first al-Qaeda trial held in Spain.
Al Abrash had filmed a video of the Twin Towers in New York, but the judges found there was no proof this was related to terrorism.
It was initially reported the suspects were linked to an Islamic extremist cell, but police later denied this.
