Spain detains Colombian drug trafficker wanted in US

Spanish police said Tuesday they have arrested in Madrid a Colombian drug trafficker who is wanted in the United States under an international arrest warrant.

German Gonzalo Sanchez Rey is wanted in connection with a shipment of over 700 kilos (1,500 pounds) of cocaine that was intercepted from a boat in international waters in the Caribbean by the US Coast Guard in 2009, Spanish police said in a statement.

The authorities did not say when Sanchez Rey, also known as “Coleta” or “Ponytail”, was detained but a police spokeswoman said he had led “the routine life of a millionaire” in the Spanish capital.

Spanish police said they received the aid of Interpol on the operation.
