2 March 2004

VALENCIA – A drunken driver was stopped by police after his car was spotted travelling the wrong way along a motorway for 12 kilometres, police said Tuesday.

The 40-year-old was arrested after being followed by police cars along  the A3 between Valencia and Madrid at about 4am Monday.

He was driving in a Peugeot 205 near Valencia without insurance or a driving licence.

A number of police patrols were deployed to stop an accident happening.

After he was arrested, tests found the man was driving under the influence of alcohol and was charged with this offence along with driving without a licence and insurance.

The roads in Spain are among the most dangerous in Europe, with most deaths caused by drink-driving or speeding.

Figures for 2000 showed the number of deaths per 100,000 people in Spain was 14.6 percent – worse than Britain, France and  Italy.
