MADRID — The death toll on the Spanish roads fell by over a third during the first two weeks of August, traffic authorities said on Monday.
In what is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year, when many people are setting off for or returning from holiday, 102 people were killed in accidents – 33.7 percent less than in the same period last year.
During August 2005, 154 people lost their lives.
Authorities said last weekend 19 people were killed in 18 accidents.
In comparison, during the same weekend in 2005, 31 died in crashes and 27 crashes.
The worst day for deaths was last Sunday, when 9 people were killed in 9 accidents. Four were seriously injured.
Authorities believe that the new points-based driving licence has greatly reduced the number of fatal accidents since it was brought in July.
