MADRID – Foreigners who were caught up in the terrorist attacks in Madrid have six months to claim Spanish citizenship, the government said Monday.
People from 35 different countries were either killed or injured in the bomb attacks.
Many were immigrants from South America who were applying for residence in Spain.
Immediately after the attacks, the outgoing prime minister Jose Maria Aznar said any foreign victims could claim Spanish citizenship if they wished.
A Royal Decree, issued Monday, said if any victims wanted to claimed nationality they needed to do this within six months of 11 March.
They need to present documentation from the Interior Ministry to show that they were victims of the terrorist bomb attacks.
They would then need to present this to the Ministry of Justice and will be automatically granted Spanish citizenship.
