Christmas season anti-terrorist operation begins

21 December 2005

MADRID — Spain is to start a Christmas season anti-terror operation involving more than 40,000 officers.

Interior minister Jose Antonio Alonso said it will start from Thursday across the country.

But he was careful to add that the plan has not been triggered by any specific risk.

Alonso said Spain’s security ministry will be in charge of the plan’s implementation.

The National Police, the Guardia Civil and other government departments including the security services will be involved.

The minister also said the plan will deal with possible terrorist threats in both crowded places and strategic areas.

The aim will be to detect terrorists and prevent attacks.
