Chefs make world’s largest pastry

27 September 2004

BARCELONA – Chefs from Parets del Valles, in Barcelona, cooked themselves into the Guinness Book of World Records by making the largest pastry in the world.

The strawberry-flavoured sweet was concocted to measure 1,100 metres (3,606 feet) long and was crafted in celebration of the municipality’s 1,100th-year anniversary Sunday.

It was 15 centimetres (5.9 inches) thick, weighed 900 kilograms (1,980 pounds) and was made with 600 kilograms (1,321 pounds) of sugar, 300 litres (79 gallons) of water and an unknown – or perhaps unmeasured – quantity of “essence of strawberry.”

Pastry chefs started to work on the record-breaking pastry on Montserrat Roig Street, where – once it had been completed – the locals had a chance to taste the pastry.
