Car found with 100kg of explosives is linked to ETA

21 June 2007

MADRID – Spanish police have found a car containing 100 kilograms of explosives, the Civil Guard said Thursday.

A Civil Guard official said it was not known if the vehicle was linked to the armed Basque separatist group ETA or if it was rigged as a car bomb.

The car was found in the town of Ayamonte in southwest Huelva province, near the border with Portugal.

Cadena Ser radio quoted anti-terrorism officials as saying the car was linked to ETA but not rigged as a bomb and was being used to transport the explosives.

ETA called off 15-month-old cease-fire earlier this month, blaming the government for a failed peace process and saying it was once again becoming “active on all fronts.” This was interpreted as signaling an imminent resumption of attacks, but so far there have not been any.
