Car bomb explodes in northern Spain after warning

21 March 2008

MADRID – A car bomb exploded in northern Spain on Friday, but there were no injuries after a warning was called in, the Spanish state broadcaster RNE reported.

The report said the bomb exploded next to a police barracks.

Beforehand, however, a caller identifying himself as a member of the underground Basque separatist organisation ETA called in to give a warning. The attack took place in the city of Calahorra, some 250 kilometres north-east of the capital Madrid.

Police sealed off the area around the explosion site, amid fears that a second bomb may have been planted.
