British toddler killed after getting off plane

26 May 2004

BARCELONA – A British boy aged between two and four was run over and killed at Barcelona airport Wednesday minutes after arriving in Spain for a holiday with his parents.

The child, whose name was not released, was hit by a car as he walked off a pavement near terminal B.

The tragedy happened Wednesday morning after the family had arrived to spend a few days in Catalonia, in north-east Spain.

Spanish police said it was still not clear how the child had been hit by the car.

The car driver was helping police with their investigation.

The shocked parents were being comforted by friends.

The British consulate in Barcelona refused to comment on the tragedy.

Terminal B handles flights from Britain to Spain and domestic flights.
