Barcelona airport doublescapacity with third runway

29 September 2004

BARCELONA – A third runway at Barcelona airport which is expected to double capacity for flights to the north-eastern city has been opened officially.

The EUR 300 million project was unveiled by Employment Minister Magdalena Alvarez and the president of the Catalonian regional government, Pasqual Maragall, Tuesday.

The new runway will mean Barcelona will be able to have 90 take-offs and arrivals every hour.

It should allow a huge rise in the number of flights to the Catalan capital, particularly from low-cost airlines.

It measures 2,660 metres in length and 60 metres in width.

Work on the new runway started in September 2002 and the environmental impact of the scheme has been carefully monitored.
