GRANADA – The family of a 25-year-old man who died after an operation to reduce his weight on Wednesday lodged a complaint against the health services.
The man died in the hospital in Teruel, in Andalucia, after suffering two infections.
According to José Miguel Castillo Calvin, a lawyer who specialises in medical cases, the family is waiting for a reply to their claims.
The man, who worked as a maintenance man in the hospital in which he had the operation, weighed 170 kg.
He had the operation on 5 May 2003 and died on 8 July from septic shock.
Antonia Espinosa, a cousin of the dead man, said he was “totally healthy” when he was operated on. She claimed he died as a result of medical negligence.
She added that neither the patient or the family were advised of the risks which come with this type of operation.
The hospital has denied negligence.
This case comes after the death of a 31-year-old man who had a similar operation at a hospital in Granada and died last year.
In that case his family lodged a claim against the surgeon who denied negligence.
