Air chaos hits flights from Britain

MADRID – At least 140 flights between Spain, Britain and Ireland were delayed Thursday after chaos at an air control centre near London.

There was a fault in the system at the West Drayton control centre, in west London, which caused chaos for flights between the three countries.

In Spain, AENA, which controls flights from all Spanish airports, said delays would last until at least 3pm.

At least 75 flights which were due to come to Spain Thursday morning were hit by delays of around hour.

And 65 flights from Spain to Britain, Ireland and Iceland were similarly delayed.

AENA officials explained all flight control systems were “working normally” in Spain.

But problems in Britain had forced flights to that country to be delayed until at least 3pm.

Other flights to or from Spain which did not use British air space were not delayed.
