A faster train journey between Madrid and coast

19 September 2006

MADRID — Travelling between Madrid and Catalonia is going to be much quicker from next month, a minister said on Tuesday.

The high speed train between Madrid and Leida in Catalonia is to travel at up to 280kmh, the development minister Magdalena Álvarez revealed.

Three years ago when it was launched, the AVE train could only travel at a maximum speed of 200kmh.

This later increased to 250kmh.

But after track-widening work, Alvarez said the train can now reach speeds of up to 280kmh.

This service should start from December between Taragona, to the south of Barcelona, and Lleida.

Plans are underway to unite Barcelona and later the French border with Madrid, though works have been delayed.

When the capital is finally joined by the AVE train, it will mean passengers will be able get to the Spanish capital from Catalonia in three hours.
