6,000 lightning rays in the Balearics

MADRID – The violent storms that have been strafing the Mediterranean coast saw no less than 6,000 rays of lightning discharging over the southern Balearic Islands in a 24 hour period up to early Thursday morning.

In own downpour in the early hours, the village of Porreras saw 5.1 litres of rain falling in just 30 minutes while Pollensa received 4 litres, according to the Balearics Meteorological Centre.

Over the 24-hour period, Sa Cabaneta was the worst hit with 12.5 litres per square metre followed by Llucmajor with 11.5 litres and Felanitx 11.2.

Having recorded more than 6,000 rays hitting an area between Mallorca and Ibiza, the Centre said the worst of the storms had passed by early Thursday.

The storm clouds had begun to head further east towards the Italian island of Sardinia, it added.
