9 September 2005

VALENCIA — Thirty-five people have been injured, four of them seriously, when three trains crashed outside Valencia.

The accident happened between the villages of Paiporta and Picanya, five kilometres from the city, according to a spokesman for the regional government.

The crash happened when two of the trains were delayed and the third collided into the back of them.

Josep Almenar, mayor of Picanya, said one of the trains had broken down just before the crash.

The accident happened just 100 metres from Paiporta station.

A regional government spokesman said a breakdown in the automatic breaking system or an error on the part of one of the engineers could have caused the accident.

The trains were derailed and one of the drivers and three passengers were  seriously injured.

The cabins of two trains have been totally destroyed.

An emergency services helicopter flew to the scene nd 12 ambulances were also attending.
