Athletics: Wayde Van Niekerk marries Chesney Campbell

South African 400 metres Olympic champion Wayde Van Niekerk has married his fiancee Chesney Campbell, posting an image of himself with his new bride on social media over the weekend.

“Can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you @Neshney. So blessed to start this next adventure with the girl of my dreams! I love you!” he tweeted on Sunday morning.

The post included a black and white image of Van Niekerk, wearing a traditional three-piece suit and a buttonhole carnation. He sat alongside Campbell who wore a white veil and flowing dress and held a pale bouquet.

“And the most important is love,” wrote Van Niekerk alongside the image which he also posted to Instagram.

The couple of more than four years became engaged in December last year when they posted a clip of Campbell showing off her engagement ring on Instagram, accompanied by the words: “she said yes”.

Van Niekerk, 25, holds the world record for the 400m and in August he narrowly missed out on emulating Michael Johnson’s feat of the 200/400m world championship double.

“A big congratulations to this beautiful and powerful couple! May God continue to richly bless you and give you many happy years,” tweeted Springboks and Golden Lions winger Courtnall Skosan.

Van Niekerk and Campbell met at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, central South Africa, according to local media.
