US consulate worker stabbed to death in South Africa

A woman stabbed to death an American man who worked at the US consulate in South Africa in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

A guard at a residential complex in upmarket Johannesburg suburb Illovo heard a woman screaming around 3:00 am (0100 GMT), said police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini.

“When he went to investigate he saw the woman had a knife in her hand and the man was lying on the floor,” Dlamini told AFP.

“He was stabbed in the upper body,” he said.

The 41-year-old man worked in the American consulate’s IT department in Johannesburg, according to Dlamini.

Embassy spokesman Jack Hillmeyer confirmed “that a US government employee was killed in an incident this morning in Johannesburg.”

The South African woman, 29, will appear in court on Monday.
