South African road crash kills three Chinese tourists

Three Chinese tourists were killed and 17 injured in a road crash near Johannesburg this week, South Africa’s tourism minister announced Friday.

“We are truly saddened by this tragic incident,” Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom said in a statement.

Of the injured, 11 are in “critical” condition, Claire Pohlman, general manager of the operator, Walk Through Africa Tours, told AFP.

The group of 20 tourists were returning from Sun City, South Africa’s prime resort spot, north of Johannesburg, when a driver of a van tried to overtake and rammed into their bus, sending it rolling several times.

The accident occured on Wednesday, the same day the tourists had arrived from Beijing.

China is South Africa’s fourth largest long-haul tourist market, according to the minister.
