South African minister denounces Christmas road carnage

More than 800 people have died in road accidents in South Africa since the start of the festive season, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said Tuesday.

At least 18 people were killed in a crash involving a mini-bus on Monday, the latest in a string of deadly accidents in December.

“This brings the road death toll to more than 800 since the start of the festive season,” the minister said in a statement, without specifying the exact dates.

“As government, we are intensifying our efforts to improve road safety. However, each of us has an important role to play to stop this carnage which causes unnecessary loss of lives and injuries,” he added.
