S.African ex-minister jailed for graft

A former junior minister in South Africa was on Friday to start serving five years for corruption after he cleared the development of a golf estate despite environmental concerns.

A court in 2006 found David Malatsi guilty of taking 100,000 rand ($11,250; 8.900 euros) from a property developer who planned to construct Roodefontein Golf and Country Estate. |At the time he was minister for environmental affairs and development planning for the Western Cape province.

Prison officials said Malatsi was awaited at Goodwood Prison in Cape Town on Friday after a high court this week rejected his appeal against the conviction.

“We are still waiting for him. He hasn’t checked in yet, but he must be in today,” Simphiwe Xoka, a prison spokesman told AFP.

The cheque had been handed to him in 2002, shortly before he was appointed national deputy minister for Social Development, a job he held for just about a year.
