Young people have been increasing their levels of mobility in recent years, not least attributed to the ease of movement within, and increasing levels of access to, Europe. As jobs become scarce in certain regions, young people are following opportunities and relocating to pursue them.

We at Thinkyoung are currently in the process on surveying expatriate young people between the ages of 18 and 28 who are either recent graduates or young professionals for a project on youth migration and expatriate mobility. We would like to investigate youth attitudes towards different countries and the lifestyle they lead within them.

As young people will shape the future of mobility within Europe, analysing youth migration patterns is of particular importance on an economic, political and social scale. We want inform about the lives of young expats and what benefits this brings to society. We want to find out what needs to be done to improve the conditions of expats in Europe.

The project focuses on both the drivers of migration and the barriers to migration, demonstrating why young people move to European countries, how long they intend to stay, why they chose a particular country of destination, and the economic impact this has on the host country.

We are hoping to gain 3,200 answers from expatriates currently based in the following seven countries:

  • Italy
  • France
  • Germany
  • Belgium
  • Poland
  • United Kingdom
  • The Netherlands
