Colruyt cheapest supermarket

Colruyt is the cheapest for basic products. For branded products it shares the honour with Red Market that was excluded from last year’s survey after it manipulated its prices when the investigation was conducted last time.

Aldi and Lidl are cheapest when it comes to own brands.

Test Aankoop says that in most cases consumers purchase a mix of branded, basic and own brand products. Colruyt came home cheapest in the comparison of supermarkets that took account of a mixture of branded, own brand and basic products. The Belgian press agency Belga reports that Albert Heijn was 4% more expensive on average followed by Red Market (5%), Okay (6%) and Carrefour Hyper (8%). Match and Smatch with prices 20% and 23% higher on average feature at the bottom of the list.

Test Aankoop researchers noted down 123,029 prices in 722 supermarkets between last October and January.
