Spain is also known to produce a great number of popular beers that are favourites in countries across the globe. We all have our own preferences.
However, according to a recent survey by consumer rights organisation OCU, the most popular beers sold in this country have very little character, and more or less all taste the same. There isn’t one that really stands out above any of the others.
OCU analysed a total of 31 brands of beer. Twenty-one of them were categorised as “normal” (the most consumed) and the other 10 fell into the “special” category.
During the study, factors such as composition, ingredients, labelling and taste were considered, and it was revealed that the best brands from the special category were Ambar and Estrella Galicia, while Hipercor Lager is the best type of classic beer.
Prices
Prices range from 0,70 euro a litre, which is the cheapest, to 2,13 euro a litre, making the average around 1,28 euro.
Obviously, the cheapest are the lesser-known or supermarket brands and the most expensive are those that have been imported. Popular Spanish brands of beer are generally somewhere in the middle.
Lack of quality
The study has shown that in general the most consumed brands of beer are not those with the best quality. A third of those tested did not score over the “acceptable” mark with regards to taste. Despite this, none of them actually failed either.
In the special beer category, the brands that scored the highest included:
- Ambar Especial Lager
- Estrella Galicia Especial
- Stark Especial (Mercadona)
- Condis Premium Pilsener (Condis)
Popular brands of beer that didn’t fare as well as expected include:
- Estrella Damm (12th)
- Amstel Premium (15th)
- Mahou Clásica (16th)
- Mahou 5 Estrellas (20th)
- Cruzcampo Pilsen (22nd)
- San Miguel Premium Especial (25th)
And so, the 10 top-selling beers in Spain are:
