Bonfire Night Fireworks 2009

The Bonfire Night 2009 in London will be held at various venues across the city and will continue the tradition that started 400 years ago. Bonfire Night is an important event on the London calendar, marking the day Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament.

History of Bonfire Night.
It was on November 5th 1605 that Guy Fawkes was captured attempting to blow up King James I and the English Parliament.

The plotters led by Robert Catesby, stored 36 barrels (almost 2 tons) of gunpowder, covered by iron bars and firewood, in a cellar hired by one of the group, just under the House of Lords.

Famously the plot to blow up Parliament was foiled following an anonymous letter sent to William Parker, 4th Baron Monteagle, which warned him not to attend the opening of parliament on November 5th. Many believe that this letter was written by Francis Tresham, one of the conspirators and Lord Monteagle’s brother-in-law.

In the early hours of November 5th the authorities stormed the cellar and found Guy Fawkes, who initially gave his name as John Johnson, with the 36 barrels of gunpowder. He was immediately arrested and subsequently held captive in the Tower of London where he was tortured to reveal the names of his co-conspirators. Read more about the plot here.
