Unconscious man found floating in Tavira river dies in hospital

TaviratempBridgeA 75-year-old man who was found unconscious and floating in Tavira’s Gilão River, has died.

The victim, in a serious condition, was rushed to the Vila Real de Santo António Health Center, but did not respond to treatment.

An alert was given at 14.52 on Tuesday, by several people walking along the embankment path leading to the Tavira ferry.

According to the Tavira Bombeiros, the man showed no signs of injury, was unconscious and in a cardiac arrest.

Tavira’s Maritime Police is investigating the causes of the incident with the most likely one being that he fell in, with no third parties involved.

The man showed no signs of violence, but authorities have yet to clarify whether he was in the river through choice or accident, according to the commander of the Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António ports.
