Renovations begin on the old auction house in Portimão

Dr Photo - RENOVATIONS BEGIN ON THE OLD AUCTION HOUSE IN PORTIMÃOEarlier this week, renovations began on the auction house building in Portimão, with a municipal investment of 960,000 euros and is due to be completed within 6 months.

“The works include the replacement of the roof and the reinforcement of the walls and of the entire structure, with respect for the original design of the property, with the ground floor having a large multifunction room, prepared to receive cultural and recreational events, while in the the back of the building a cafeteria area is planned”, explains the Portimonense local authority.

The works in this historical building, which marks the landscape of the riverside area of ??Portimão, also include “the modernisation of water, electricity and telecommunications networks, the creation of several office type rooms on the ground floor and the first floor, as well as sanitary facilities” .

This fundraising intervention, which had been planned for some time, finally received approval a few weeks ago via approval from the Court of Auditors and intends to transform the old auction house into a building for public use, to host cultural projects, festivities, celebrations and events linked to local and regional traditions, mainly related to gastronomy, handicrafts and other popular events.

Located right at the entrance to the city by the so-called “old bridge”, the building was built in 1916 to house the first power plant of the then Vila Nova de Portimão, starting to function as a auction house between the 1950s and 1980s, also housing several roasted sardine restaurants, before being identified in the Municipal Master Plan as a property of municipal interest.
