Portuguese Red Cross ambulance crashes, causing injuries to those inside

Photo by Filipe Guerreiro PORTUGUESE RED CROSS AMBULANCE CRASHES, CAUSING INJURIES TO THOSE INSIDEYesterday afternoon, a Portuguese Red Cross ambulance transporting non-emergency patients on the Via do Infante, crashed, leaving one of the six occupants in a serious condition and the vehicle destroyed.

The accident occurred on the on Via do Infante, at km 95 in the council of in the Foupana area of Moncarapacho, as the ambulance was travelling towards Olhão-Tavira, just before the Olhão service area.

The alert was given at 16:53 after the vehicle overturned, ending up on a track parallel to the A22. Six people were injured, two men and two women who were passengers in the ambulance and two male crew members.

Three of the occupants had to be extricated by emergency services, and one sustained serious injuries. All were taken to Faro Hospital.

The rescue was attended 15 vehicles carrying 31 operatives from INEM, GNR, the Portuguese Red Cross, Olhão Municipal Fire Department and the A22 Concessionaire.
