Portugal’s 18-year-olds can apply for free Interrail passes

tgvThe European Commission is offering free Interrail passes to thousands of 18-year-olds in its ‘DiscoverEU’ initiative.

The application process started last week and runs to May 16th.

The Europe Direct Centre Algarve, hosted in the CCDR building in Faro, is part of the European Commission’s network of centres supporting the initiative.

To apply, young people must have been born between 2 July 2000 and 1 July 2001, have the nationality of one of the EU Member States and have a citizen’s card or passport number when filling in the online application.

Then, whoever is selected will be able to spend a month traveling and discovering Europe between August 2019 and January 2020. The cost of an Interrail pass normally is €258 and covers 31 countries.

The online application includes multiple-choice questions on the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, the European Union youth initiatives and the European Parliament elections. There is also a tie-breaker question.

More than 40,000 young Europeans will have the chance to win a free pass.

In the future, the European Commission’s goal is to make passes free for all young people, as a mark of reaching adulthood.
