Portugal voted ‘best European destination’ third year running

The politician was in Madeira at the World Travel Awards as Portugal’s tourism sector continued to win prize after prize, notably being selected as the best European tourist destination.

Portugal was awarded this prize in 2017, 2018 and again on Saturday, showing the international recognition of the destination.

Pedro Siza Vieira, says that this distinction “shows how we are at the top of the preferences of international tourists.”

Portugal won 39 awards, with Lisbon receiving the award for best city break destination and best cruise port. Madeir was voted as the best island destination.

The Passadiços do Paiva won in two categories: best tourism development project and best adventure tourist attraction. The Dark Sky Alqueva Observatory received the European prize for responsible tourism. Pestana hotels were honored with four awards and Turismo de Portugal received the award of the best official tourist agency.

The minister added that “it is a special pride to see that, once we have been elected the most sustainable destination in Europe in March, we will continue to win sustainability awards, as in the Passadiços do Paiva and the Dark Sky Alqueva. We are getting closer to being the most sustainable destination in the world.”
