Olhão fishing port to receive €500,000 revamp

Portugal’s fishing authority Docapesca is planning to invest nearly €500,000 in renovations at Olhão’s fishing port.

The port is described as “the most important in the Algarve” in terms of the amount of fish that is sold as well as revenue.

Most of the money – around €250,000 – will be used to renovate the port’s gutters and the areas surrounding the docks. Works are expected to begin before the end of March.

Another €100,000 will be ploughed into the purchase of a new cold chamber and the substitution of the saltwater supply system for one of the docks.

CM adds that the port building will be painted, lighting will be improved, CCTV surveillance will be installed, and additional equipment will be purchased.

Docapesca has highlighted that, over the last few years, it has invested around €380,000 in the Olhão fishing port.

Data from the national board of natural resources, safety and maritime services (DGRNSSM) shows that around 10,000 tons of fish were sold at the port in the first 11 months of 2019, representing nearly €17.5 million in revenue.

Taking all fishing ports in the Algarve into account, around 18,000 tons of fish were sold for nearly €49 million.
