GNR rescue a vulture strolling the streets of Albufeira

Photo by Barlaventp.pt GNR RESCUE A VULTURE STROLLING THE STREETS OF ALBUFEIRAThe Environmental Protection Nucleus (NPA) of the GNR of Albufeira rescued a fouveiro vulture on Tuesday (Gyps fulvus), after a report that the bird had attacked a person on their terrace. 

The NPA located the vulture and captured it, handing it over to the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), the CITES Authority (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) in Portugal.

Also known by the name of griffin, the internationally protected fouveiro vulture can measure up to one meter in length and 2.7 meters in wingspan, weighing between six and 12 kilos. It is an internationally protected specimen, according to CITES.

In Portugal, the main colonies are located in the Natural Park of Douro Internacional, in the Natural Park of the International Tagus and in Portas de Ródão, with some specimens also in the Serra de São Mamede, further south.
