European Commission highlights Algarve as reference region for healthy aging

healthy agingThe Algarve has been distinguished by the European Commission as a Reference Centre for Active and Healthy Aging. The award is to be presented this Wednesday, the 25th of September in Aarhus, Denmark.

The recognition given to the Algarve results from work that has been done by various regional and national entities, especially the Algarve Academic Research and Training Centre, the Algarve Biomedical Centre, and in partnership with Loulé Council.

Just last week, the Ministry of Health, together with the municipality of Loulé, presented a pioneering project that aims to train and support citizens, namely the elderly, to know how to use online health services, such as to make appointments, request online prescriptions, or document requests.

The project started in Loulé, but is set to extend to the whole of the Algarve by 2020 and it is expected that in the last quarter of next year it could be implemented in the rest of the country.

The aim of the project is to combat issues in navigating the healthcare system by improving public access to information, particularly for more vulnerable populations, both in terms of age and geographical isolation.

This is just one of several projects that the Ministry of Health has underway in order to promote their hopes for a population that is able to age healthily and actively.
